Is it better for a book to make you FEEL something (emotions) or to be WELL WRITTEN?

My dad and I had a discussion like this in the car a while ago. We were talking about what's really a great book because I really didn't want to read the reading summer list because I thought they would all be really boring, either because I couldn't relate to them in any way at all or just because they were too complicated for me to understand at all.
I got on this huge tangent on how the Twilight Saga were my favorite books and they were good books to me because they made me FEEL emotions and I could totally relate to them even though I did agree with him that they were poorly written. My question was "Who cares if it's not the best written book in the world? Isn't it a good book if you can feel what the characters in the book are feeling?".
On the other hand I guess the generic stereotypical definition of a good book is biased on if it's well written. I CANNOT read something and get something out of it if I CANNOT relate to it. I get board and I zone out, then to me it's not a good book.

I think a books quality depends both on how popular it is and how much the characters are like regular people.

I mean, I read these books called the Bartimaeus trilogy, and although they were written well and all that junk, nobody reads them, and therefore it's not a good book, it's that simple. And the characters are so complex, who wants to think that hard?

In my opinion books like Harry Potter and Twilight are the best books ever for those reasons.

(P. S. If you can't tell, the entire above comment was sarcastic. So I don't confuse anyone, any comment I make in the future that's sarcastic will be signed with an 'S' at the bottom.)

(P. P. S. I have never read Twilight and I am sure it is a perfectly good series, but I will probably never read it just because of how popular it is. I'm like that.)

What in the world is the point of leaving a comment if it's sarcastic? If it's sarcastic then you don't really mean it so it's meaningless, pointles, and kinda rude- like whoever you leave a comment on and make it sarcastic it's like you're saying "this post is stupid and I really couldn't care less but I wanted to make a comment just because" or something to that extent. So maybe you should leave comments that you mean instead because it can be kinda frustrating or rude or even hurtful sometimes- not that it was for me but, still, I think you should just be carefull. Thanks for the comment anyway.

Excuse me, but sarcasm in this sense is a form of satire. Satire is a form of expression. Often the most effective one as well.

Yea. Rude expression.

hey celie, I agree with you, it is more important to me to that a book keeps me intersested and that I can relate to the characters that I am reading about. If books don't make you feel anything then they are totally boring. However I think that the best writers know how to make you feel things and relate to their characters, as well as make their books well written.
